Scripture: verse 13
…one sees joy and celebrating,
killing of oxen, slaughtering of sheep,
eating of meat, drinking of wine —
“Let’s eat and drink now,
because tomorrow we’ll be dead!”
Observation: Israel is under attack (again) and God wanted them to respond to the attack by repenting and turning to Him. Instead, they respond with despair and resort to a purely materialist philosophy: enjoy the good life now, because this is all there is. (It reminds me strongly of Chesterton’s comments on the Rubaiyat of Omar Kayyam.)
Back in chapter 5, Isaiah said, “Woe to those who are heroes at drinking wine!” Turning to food and drink to console themselves over their imminent deaths buys them nothing but contempt from God. They’ve given up entirely rather than turn to the God who made them.
Got promises to be a strong tower for us when we need it. There is no reason for us to despair.
Application: Turn to God in trouble. There is no danger He can’t rescue you from.
Prayer: Father, thank you for being my protector. Thank you for giving me life and hope in the face of difficulty. Help me to turn to you always. Amen.
